General Introduction
Iranian export bitumen is one of the most recognized and highest-quality bitumen products in global markets, derived from the refining of heavy crude oil from the country’s southern fields in the most modern bitumen production units (vacuum distillation units and blowing towers). Types and Available Grades
Iranian export bitumen products are supplied in two main categories: pure (penetration grade) bitumen and modified bitumen. All products are manufactured and offered in accordance with the following international standards:
· Pure Petroleum Bitumen (Penetration Grade):
Conforming to ASTM D946 and EN 12591 – Common export grades include:
40/50, 60/70, 80/100, and 85/100
(The most resistant grade for hot climates is 40/50, while 60/70 is the most consumed and versatile export grade. Grades 80/100 and 85/100 are recommended for moderate and cold regions.)
· Oxidized Bitumen (Blown Asphalt):
Conforming to ASTM D312 – Marketed as Industrial Bitumen. Common grades:
85/25, 90/40, 115/15
(This type of bitumen is produced by blowing air through pure bitumen at high temperatures, giving it a low softening point and high thermal resistance, used for moisture barriers, waterproofing membranes, and industrial applications.)
· Bitumen Emulsion:
Cationic and anionic types with various bitumen and solvent percentages, mainly for cold asphalt and road maintenance operations. (Supplied in drums or special packaging due to the short setting time.)
· Polymer Modified Bitumen (PMB):
Produced with SBS and APP polymers to increase elasticity, resistance to rutting, and thermal cracking; suitable for airport runways, highways, and bridges.
· Performance Grade (PG):
Conforming to the Superpave grading system (AASHTO M320) – Ability to supply grades such as PG 64-22, PG 70-10, and others based on the climatic conditions of the destination country, upon customer request.
Technical Specifications and Quality Control
· Penetration (@25°C): Within the range of the selected grade (e.g., 60 to 70 deci-millimeters for the 60/70 grade).
· Softening Point: Between 46 and 56 °C for penetration grades and above 85 °C for oxidized types.
· Penetration Index: Precisely controlled to ensure desirable rheological behavior.
· Ductility: Above 100 cm at 25 °C (indicating excellent adhesion and flexibility).
· Flash Point: Above 250 °C (ensuring safety during transport and melting).
· Solubility in Trichloroethylene: Over 99% (high purity).
· Supplementary Tests: Weight loss after Thin Film Oven Test (TFOT), dynamic and kinematic viscosity, Fraass breaking point (for cold regions).
All shipments are loaded accompanied by a Certificate of Analysis from reputable domestic and international laboratories. Third-party inspection by companies such as SGS, Bureau Veritas, Intertek, and Geo-Chem at the origin is available. Sampling during loading is conducted in accordance with sampling standards (ASTM D140).
